Canada wins two Olympic medals in slopestyle snowboarding

The 23-year-old Parrot earned his first Olympic medal after finishing fifth in the slopestyle event in Sochi.

McMorris and Parrot were two of four Canadians in Sunday morning's finals, joined by Tyler Nicholson and Sebastien Toutant after impressive qualifying runs on Saturday. Down to his final run - after crashing on his first two attempts - Parrot seized silver in men's slopestyle snowboard with an even score of 86.00. The bronze medallist in slopestyle at Sochi - where he rode on a recently broken rib - crashed into a tree in the Whistler backcountry previous year, shattering several bones and requiring multiple surgeries to correct life-threatening injuries. I crossed that finish line knowing that no matter what happened next, this was it.

The Mark McMorris story is one for the ages, given he very almost died last March after crashing into a tree while backcountry snowboarding near Whistler, B.C. The haunting sound of McMorris moaning and choking on his own blood, captured in the CBC documentary Unbroken, is that of a man clinging to life. "I'm just lucky to be here".

While they're both Canadians, the rivalry between Parrot and McMorris is undeniable.

Redmond Gerard of the United States won the gold.

Parrot, who won a Dew Tour event in slopestyle just a couple of weeks ago, was still a little under the radar relative to McMorris, who was one of the stories of the Games just by being here. "It's definitely emotional to be here, and I'm just happy to be through to the finals", he said. Toutant and Parrot had yet to put together clean runs.

"It's a duel that motivates me", said Fourcade, the 29-year-old French army officer. "I saw Red landing his run". I think with three it's more fair. Then his teammates went out and backed him up.

The English-to-snowboard translator confirms that this means it would be very good indeed.
