Apple reportedly developing custom processor for three updated Mac models

While not necessarily groundbreaking news on its own, the fact that the tech giant is planning to include what Gurman describes as "custom processors" in these upcoming Macs, marks a fundamental shift in strategy for Apple. The company is said to be working on at least three new Mac models which will feature an ARM coprocessor. Of course, iPhones and iPads have used the company's own chips for several years, and the Apple Watch has since its launch in 2015. Would Macs (and their users) be better served by Intel, whose high-performance chips have been undermined by security holes, or by Apple, whose chips would be untested in laptops and desktops but could maximize the potential of the Mac OS?

The T2 controls the boot process, audio and camera processing, as well as encryption. Some industry watchers believe it's just a matter of time before Apple begins designing the entire CPU and becomes a rival for Intel. The iPhone and iPad are clear examples of processors which perform really well and if Apple starts producing everything themselves, it is a clear indication of bidding goodbye to companies like Intel.

Qualcomm supplies modem chips for Apple's flagship iPhone devices. Apple in April 2017 had already announced it was working on its own graphics processors. Now the new report indicates, the Apple iPad for 2018 could be the first with Apple's own GPU chip.

Apple introduced its custom T1 and T2 chips into higher-end models of the MacBook Pro and the iMac Pro, respectively, over the last few years.

Previous rumours and reports suggest that we will see remodelled, redesigned Macs in 2018.
