Trump mentions Jews in Holocaust Remembrance Day message

More than a quarter of the ship's passengers died at the hands of the Nazis in concentration camps.

"Every generation must learn and apply the lessons of the Holocaust to prevent new horrors against humanity from occurring", Trump said. "We can never forget that".

Campaigners against anti-Semitism responded with outrage after it emerged that Mr Corbyn's entry in a Holocaust Educational Trust (HET) memorial book did not mention Jews.

Melania toured the U.S. Holocaust Museum alongside its director, Sarah Bloomfield. "The Western alliance which emerged from World War Two has committed itself to ensuring the security of all, that this would never happen again".

International Holocaust Remembrance Day, he said, is a reminder that tolerance must be promoted and that crimes, discrimination, racism and anti-Semitism must be fought.

Trump's statement stands in stark contrast to his statement on International Holocaust Remembrance Day previous year, which failed to specifically mention the six million Jews murdered by the Nazis in the Holocaust.

United States president Donald Trump was criticised previous year for failing to mention Jews in his message ahead of Holocaust Remembrance Day.

Historians estimate the total number of deaths to be 11 million, with the victims encompassing gay people, priests, gypsies, people with mental or physical disabilities, communists, trade unionists, Jehovah's Witnesses, anarchists, Poles and other Slavic peoples, black people and resistance fighters.

The White House defended the decision at the time, saying Jews were left out of the statement because other groups were also targeted by the Nazis during the Holocaust.

"We also remember the courageous Turkish diplomats on this occasion with highest respect".
