Smartphones with in-display fingerprint sensor showcased at CES 2018

The mechanics of setting up your fingerprint on the phone and then using it to unlock the device and do things like authenticate payments are the same as with a traditional fingerprint sensor. Vivo posted a teaser on Twitter suggesting it will unveil the first phone with in-display fingerprint sensor, which will likely be provided by Synaptics. This fingerprint sensor only requires one touch to access the smartphone. This year, the smartphone company is ready to launch its final product Consumer Electronic Show (CES) in Las Vegas.

As expected, Vivo just unveiled world's first smartphone with in-display fingerprint scanner based on the ultrasonic sensor.

Synaptics has first revealed this technology in December 2017 and the news had sparked speculation as to which smartphones would sport this particular technology. It is also said to be scratch proof and waterproof since it is covered with a glass. The in-sensor fingerprint sensor will be placed between the mainboard and the OLED panel.

Vivo hasn't announced the exact timeline for availability of this smartphone in the market, but, the company has said that details pertaining to the availability of this smartphone will be announced in early 2018. The new model may come with thinner bezels as the fingerprint sensor will move under the display.

As the biometric scanner can be fitted under the screen, we can expect a number of smartphones ditching the rear-mounted fingerprint scanners for a more comfortable user experience. In other words, vivo has deliberately solved the industry's challenge of providing a better and convenient security authentication experience for future smartphones.

At the time when Face recognition technology is replacing the fingerprint sensor, Vivo wants to revolutionize the fingerprint sensor again.

According to the senior VP at Vivo (Alex Feng), the device will provide a more comfortable authentication experience and it will be officially announced early 2018. The smartphone is said to launch in the first half of this year.
