Republic Day: Rahul Gandhi given sixth row seat, Congress livid

As the issue of seating position of Rahul Gandhi during the Republic Day parade was raked up by the Congress, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Friday hit back at the party saying in the past its chiefs were not even given seats in the VIP enclosure.

Congress president Rahul Gandhi took the designated seat in the sixth row on Friday during the Republic Day parade here, prompting an angry reaction from his party that accused the government of setting aside tradition and indulging in "cheap politics".

"The Modi government's cheap politics is for all to see". He said under the UPA, presidents of BJP which was the main opposition, Nitin Gadkari and Rajnath Singh, were allocated seat in the 11th row meant for officials. Spokesperson Randeep Surjewala posted a picture of Rahul in the crowd with the tweet: "Modi government's cheap politicking exposed before the world". "Our party believes in value system as we not only follow the rules and traditions but we also ensure the greatest of respect for all our leaders and opposition leaders", Rao said.

It was his first Republic Day function as party chief after having taken over the post from his mother Sonia Gandhi in December previous year.

He wanted to mark India's 69th Republic Day celebrations with calls for an Azad Kashmir.

Congress leaders had on Thursday alleged that assigning a seat in the fourth row to the Congress president was an attempt to "humiliate" him at a public function, which was attended by heads of government/states of 10 ASEAN countries.

State Congress Working President Vincent H. Pala said that Gandhi will be the "star campaigner" for the Congress in the ensuing assembly elections to further boost the confidence of the people.

While Rahul said he was not bothered, the Congress made its displeasure clear.
