Pierre Agnes: Quiksilver surfwear boss missing at sea

An air and sea search is underway for Pierre Agnes, the CEO of Quiksilver, after his empty boat washed up on the French coastline near surfing locale Hossegor.

According to local witnesses, Agn├Ęs went fishing Tuesday, January 30, on his motorboat Mascaret III.

The boat washed up shortly after 9:15am at Hossegor, a famed surfing spot about 30 kilometres (20 miles) north of Biarritz, the local authorities said in a statement. The French Maritime Gendarmerie began the searches with two patrol boats backed up by three helicopters.

Rescuers did not say whether he had been traveling alone.

The 54-year-old Frenchman is chief executive of Boardriders - a US-based company that until recently was known as Quiksilver. Rough seas were reported in the area, though wind was light and visibility was clear.

Quiksilver is a well-known surf-wear company founded in Australia near the shores of Torquay.

The missing exec joined Quicksilver, an Australian surfwear brand now based in the USA, almost 30 years ago and working out of the European headquarters near Biarritz.

Earlier this month Boardriders said it was preparing to buy its Australian rival Billabong, creating a group that would have a combined 630 stores in 28 countries.

L.A. -based Oaktree Capital Management owns most of Boardriders.
