HPD: Man arrested, found with guns, ammo in downtown hotel room

Houston police on Sunday arrested a man at a downtown hotel who they said had guns and ammunition in his room, according to local media. Police said responding officers found a rifle, a shotgun and a handgun in his room, plus ammunition.

Police spokesman Victor Senties said the man later told investigators he'd brought the guns into his room from his truck because he didn't want them to get stolen.

According to the Hyatt's website, the hotel is preparing its own New Year's Eve celebration at the hotel with a 50,000 balloon drop at the stroke of midnight.

While the man initially faced charges of drunk and disorderly conduct, he now faces additional charges of trespassing and unlawful carry.

Police say hotel security officers confronted the unruly man early Sunday at the bar at Houston's Hyatt Regency Hotel and called for assistance when he refused to be subdued.

Highest will be around Times Square in NY, where police said they would deploy rooftop observers and counter-snipers in more buildings than usual, as well as patrolling hotels.

Police said the man is jailed.

The name of the man hasn't been immediately released. Investigators say he was by himself and they are trying to figure out why he had the weapons.

Houston Police Chief Art Acevedo tweeted about the incident, saying the situation is contained and there is no specific threat to Houston.
