Chelsea have reportedly beaten Premier League rivals Tottenham Hotspur to the signing of Everton midfielder Ross Barkley, who will set them back around £15m.

The England worldwide has now returned to training after a painstaking rehabilitation and Antonio Conte, the Chelsea head coach, wants to bolster his squad in January.

Chelsea is racing to rush through a deal for Everton star Ross Barkley so that they can ensure that Tottenham doesn't beat them there first.

Speaking on Thursday, Everton manager Sam Allardyce admitted that his club were braced to receive further offers from "some of the big boys" for Barkley and conceded that his departure from Goodison Park is inevitable.

But Spurs were not willing to go close to what Barkley will be paid at Stamford Bridge and the deal should be announced this weekend, placating frustrated Blues boss Conte by adding depth to his squad ahead of an assault on the Champions League in 2018.

Barkley has rejected a new deal at Everton, who he joined as an 11-year-old in 2005, with his current contract due to expire at the end of this season. Chelsea did chase Ross Barkley signature during the summer window and there were even reports of a £35 million bid for the 24-year-old, but it never materialized.

According to media reports in England, Spurs' strict pay structure now sees Harry Kane and captain Hugo Lloris as the club's top earners, with the pair now earning around £100,000-a-week but Barkley reportedly asked for more than that which would have made him the club's highest earner.
