10-year-old boy dies from flu complications

Nico Mallozzi, 10, passed away Sunday in New York's Catskills region as his family drove home from a hockey tournament in Buffalo.

The boy, identified by the New Canaan Advertiser as Nico Mallozzi, had the flu and also pneumonia followed by sepsis, the newspaper said citing CT health officials.

Mallozzi's hockey team has issued a statement, reading, in part, "Nico was a great kid with a great smile and he will be missed greatly".

Mallozzi, a student at West School, left the hockey tournament early because he felt sick. Mallozzi started feeling ill Thursday and eventually went to Oishei Children's Hospital, where he was diagnosed with the flu.

"One of Nico's coaches described him best: Nico's sly little smile and charm have captivated, entertained and kept us on our toes", Kristen Morin, the creator of the page wrote as a tribute to the boy. The team created a memorial fund for Nico's family.

New Canaan Police Tweeted a message of condolence as well.

You are welcome to join us at West on Monday morning between 10:00 - 12:00 to be together in love and support.

New Canaan schools were closed Monday for the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday, but a gathering was held at the school Mallozzi attended to provide support and information for parents and students, New Canaan News reported.

Members of the community also expressed their condolences to the Mallozzi family via Twitter.

I know you join me in keeping them in our hearts.

Doctors say the boy had a case of the flu which caused a pneumonia complication that lead to sepsis and death. Luizzi said emails will be sent out to West School parents explaining the situation, followed by an email to parents across the district. "We're really going to miss him and remember him very fondly".

On Tuesday, it was learned that the boy's brother is now hospitalized after showing flu symptoms, but he's showing signs of progress and is recovering.
