Yankees trade Headley, Mitchell to Padres for outfielder

The Yankees traded Starlin Castro, their second baseman for the past two seasons, in the deal for Giancarlo Stanton last week. He hit.315 with 12 homers and 82 RBI between Double-A and Triple-A last season. It's the fact that Cashman got the Padres to take all of Headley's $13 million salary in 2018.

Headley had a steady but unspectacular three-and-a-half seasons in the Bronx, and now will return to San Diego, where he started his career in 2007. Blash has some speed to him, however, and could wind up being a decent late-game pinch-running option for NY, with the ability to defend. That could get Todd Frazier back for them, perhaps.

He receives a $1 million assignment bonus for getting traded.

"I talked to Chase this morning and explained to him that we're going to look at the situation and figure out is there space for everybody?" Padres general manager A.J. Preller said. Headley was traded to NY for Yangervis Solarte and a prospect back in 2014, and has now been shipped back to the team with which he placed fifth in National League MVP voting in 2012.

Never known as a huge average guy, Frazier posted a.213/.355/.428 line this year with 27 home runs and 76 RBI.

It's unlikely that Blash ever plays a game for the Yankees. However, a multiyear deal for Frazier could complicate a possible pursuit of Manny Machado next winter.

Bryan Mitchell, 26, was selected by the Yankees in the 16th round of the 2009 draft. Mitchell, who hasn't yet become arbitration eligible, is under team control for several more years.

Headley batted.273 with 13 home runs for the Yankees last season, but with the addition of Stanton and the presumed health of Greg Bird and prospect Gleyber Torres, Headley was going to lose a lot of at-bats at both the designated hitter spot and as an infielder so a move was nearly necessary.
