Leicester City's Algerian midfielder Riyad Mahrez has been awarded African footballer of the year in 2016.

Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane will jet 9,000 miles to Ghana and back prior to Liverpool's meeting with rivals Everton in the FA Cup next month.

On the final list are Liverpool's duo of Sadio Mane (Senegal) and Mohamed Salah (Egypt) together with Dortmund's Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang who broke the goal scoring record in Germany last season.

The African Football Confederation cut the original 11-man shortlist down to three with Uganda and Mamelodi Sundowns goalkeeper Denis Onyango amongst the initial nominees.

Aside from his goalscoring feats for Liverpool, Salah also scored the injury-time penalty for Egypt that sealed a 2-1 win against Congo and secured a place at next year's World Cup in Russian Federation.

Egypt's national team coach Hector Cuper, Morocco's Wydad coach Hussein Amotta and Nigeria's coach Gernot Rohr were among the final shortlist for this award.

The awards ceremony will be staged on January 4 in Accra, Ghana.

Meanwhile, Nigeria's Asisat Oshoala made the top three in the women category where she's joined by Cameroon's Gabrielle Onguene and Chrestina Kgatlana of South Africa.

It's not dissimilar to there being a PFA Player of the Year award in England based on player vote and another based on fan vote-both hold value, and are for most the top two awards available, but it's the one voted on by those within the game that is seen to carry more prestige in the winning.

The 2017 victor will be announced at the annual CAF gala in Accra, Ghana on January 4.
