Cops Find $300000 Worth of

An elderly California couple's cross-country trip to deliver Christmas presents to their family was cut short by a traffic stop in Nebraska, where deputies discovered the gifts they meant to deliver was more than 60 pounds of marijuana.

Authorities arrested Patrick Jiron, 80, and Barbara Jiron, 83, from Clearlake Oaks, Calif., on suspicion of marijuana possession with intent to deliver and no drug tax stamp, the News-Times reported.

It all started when deputies observed a 2016 Toyota Tacoma failing to signal a turn and driving left of the center line and conducted a traffic stop, according to the York County Sheriff's Office.

While being questioned, the couple told deputies they were headed to Vermont, and "the marijuana was for Christmas presents", according to a police report. Once the vehicle was stopped, deputies could smell what they believed to be raw marijuana, officials told the News-Times.

When asked, Patrick reportedly admitted that drugs were in the truck and allowed deputies to perform a search. Assisted by a dog from the canine unit, officers found 60 pounds of weed and multiple containers of concentrated THC in the back of the truck. The department estimated the street value of the pot at over $300,000. Barbara was not arrested, but Patrick was.

The couple claimed that the weed was not for them, and that they were going to give it all away as gifts. He posted 10 percent of his $100,000 bond and has been released from jail.
