"I think we should congratulate him, he is the star campaigner for the BJP". India is a young country.

Kriplani's jibes drew laughter from an audience which included the district collector and the district superintendent of police.

Soon after taking up the Congress baton on Saturday, Rahul Gandhi hit out at the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), accusing it of spreading hatred and violence in the country, and alleged that Prime Minister Narendra Modi was taking India back to the medieval times.

A day after assuming charge as Congress president, Rahul Gandhi hosted a dinner for party MPs and senior leaders as well as leaders of opposition parties. They break and we bind. If we do not stand by our principles, we will not be able to wage this fight for the common people. He said the country was now being compelled to imagines that businesses can be built without harmony and "that only one man, one man himself - is the voice of reason, that expertise, experience and knowledge can be cast aside for personal glory, that it is acceptable for our foreign policy to lie in tatters so that one man can feel strong, and that everything in fact is subservient to the leader's personal image".He said numerous countrymen were "disillusioned by the politics of our time" as "today, politics is devoid of kindness and truth". "I am fully confident that he will lead the party with courage and dedication", Sonia Gandhi said. "This is a moral battle and to achieve success, we must set our house in order and be ready for any kind of sacrifice", she said. "He is my son, and it is not right for me to praise him", she said.

Rahul further said, "In the 13 years that I have served in politics, I have had the honour of listening and learning from all of you".

He added that Rahul's tenure as Congress President will prove helpful for the state of Jammu and Kashmir in the long run as the new Congress chief is aware about the ground situation. He predicted that the 2004 polls would be won by the Congress under the leadership of Sonia Gandhi.

His sister Priyanka Gandhi and brother-in-law Robert Vadra were also present on the occasion.

The new party chief also met PCC delegates from various states thanking them for electing him unopposed.

While there was bursting of crackers outside the venue, women played with "gulal" and young party workers danced to the beats of "dhol".

Sonia headed the party for 19 years since 1998.

Posters and banners were put up in Lutyens' Delhi and traffic was halted around the AICC office on Akbar Road.
