US Special Counsel Reportedly Probing Plot To Hand Over Turkish Cleric Gulen

President Trump's former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn is accused of plotting to forcibly remove a Muslim cleric living in the us and delivering him to Turkey in exchange for millions of dollars.

But a new report in today's Wall Street Journal should rock the Trump administration, if not the president himself, because it deals with post-election conduct that may have continued even after the inauguration.

He is believed to be under investigation for not registering as a foreign agent, a charge leveled at former Trump campaign chair Paul Manafort in an indictment from Mueller.

Reuters reported on October 26 that one of Flynn's business associates, former CIA Director James Woolsey, pitched a $10 million contract to two Turkish businessmen to help discredit a controversial Gulen while Woolsey was an adviser to Trump's election campaign. Flynn then retroactively registered as a foreign agent.

It's still rather early in the morning, but I feel comfortable saying that the latest reporting on Michael Flynn, Donald Trump's former White House National Security Advisor, is going to be the craziest story of the day.

Lawyers for Mr Flynn labelled the allegations "outrageous" and "false".

It was a follow-up conversation to a discussion that happened in September between Mr Flynn, Erdogan's son-in-law and Turkey's foreign minister, a meeting attended by former CIA Director James Woolsey. In addition to founding and working for Flynn Intel Group, he joined his father on a trip to Moscow in December 2015 during which Flynn was paid $34,000 to speak at an event celebrating the state-sponsored news agency RT, NBC News reported. According to "people familiar with the investigation", it was at this encounter that the $15m payment was discussed.

According to the two reports, the discussions included details of how Gulen, a Muslim cleric who lives in Pennsylvania and has a large Turkish following, could be flown secretly by private jet to the isolated Turkish prison island of Imrali.

The timing of the 21 Club meeting is significant.

Flynn resigned as Trump's national security adviser on February 13 after only 24 days on the job.

As a rule, they said, they do not comment on news reports involving their client. "Evidence that Flynn was prepared to act in such an unlawful way could help prove a case against him in other activities as well involving his ties to Russian Federation during the campaign".

Flynn resigned almost three weeks after Sally Yates, the acting attorney general at the time, warned the White House that Flynn could be vulnerable to Russian blackmail over his conversations with Russia's ambassador to the US, Sergey Kislyak.

WASHINGTON, DC - MARCH 19: House Science, Space and Technology Committee member Rep. Dana Rohrabacher (R-CA) questions witnesses from NASA, the Department of Defense and the White House during a hearing in the Rayburn House Office Building on Capitol Hill March 19, 2013 in Washington, DC. Nor did the attorney representing the elder Flynn, Robert Kelner. Flynn's son has denied any wrongdoing.

The Alliance for Shared Values, a group representing Gülen supporters in the US, said: "The US justice system should be commended for not giving in to the Turkish government's campaign against Mr Gülen, no matter how nefarious a plan the Erdogan regime could concoct nor how much money it could offer people who might entertain such plans".
