Singer, former teen idol David Cassidy dead at 67

In an interview with Britain's Telegraph, Cassidy he said he had been on the brink of financial ruin on two occasions, blaming his business managers in the 1970s for squandering his wealth. His publicist, Jo-Ann Geffen said on Monday that his family had joined him in hospital. Musicians and actors alike expressed their condolences and shared memories about the influence of the former teen heartthrob. Cassidy has had numerous personal problems in the decades following his initial success, ranging from substance abuse to bankruptcy.

Cassidy leaves behind two children: Arrow star Katie Cassidy (pictured right), and a son, Beau.

Cassidy was married and divorced three times. The singer had revealed earlier this year that he had dementia and would stop performing so he could "enjoy life".

Kicked out of high school for truancy, Cassidy dreamed of becoming an actor and had made appearances on Bonanza, Ironside and other programs before producers at ABC asked him to audition for The Partridge Family, unaware that he could sing and intending at first to have him mime songs to someone else's voice. "The original crush", she wrote.

After Cassidy was hospitalized Saturday, his half-brother thanked the singer's fans on Facebook.

My uncle David Cassidy has sadly passed away tonight. "Now, I will carry him, along with all of the funny/sad/extraordinary days we shared, none more filled with love than these last few at his side".

Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys reminisced about the time they spent together at the beginning of their careers. "I want to love". He was a very talented and nice person.

The Partridge Family aired from 1970-74 and was intended at first as a vehicle for Shirley Jones, the Oscar winning actress and Cassidy's stepmother.

David found fame playing Keith Partridge in The Partridge Family, a 1970s sitcom about a family who formed a rock and roll band.

Even while The Partridge Family was still in primetime, Cassidy anxious that he was mistaken for the wholesome character he played.

Cassidy gained so much attention during that time that the media began talking about "Cassidymania," according to NBC News.

The group was a spiritual successor to the Monkees, the "prefab four", who became a hit act in the 1960s after starring in a television show of the same name.

Cassidy, second from right in the back row, is seen with fellow members of The Partridge Family cast. He was 67 years old.

However, Keith Partridge was Cassidy's biggest - and most beloved - role.
