One killed in shooting near University of Utah in western US

A shooting on the campus of the University of Utah in the USA state's capital of Salt Lake City has resulted in one person's murder, according to the local police.

Police are searching for a suspect.

The Deseret News reports the university sent an alert at 9 p.m.to students and staff to shelter in place.

A Utah Department of Public Safety helicopter launched to help university police search for the suspect identified as Austin Boutain, 24. SWAT teams searched the canyon area through Tuesday morning, with snipers watching to make sure Boutain, believed to be armed and risky, did not threaten officials.

Is a white man wearing black clothes and beanie hat, as well as a tattoo on his face with a cross and teardrop. The university tweeted that he possibly was driving a forest green pick-up truck with Colorado plates.

Golden Police Department Capt. Joe Harvey stressed that the Boutains are persons of interest, and not suspects, in the Colorado death.

During a news conference Tuesday morning, authorities stated they had reason to believe Boutain and his wife were also connected to a recent homicide in Colorado, according to the Salt Lake Tribune.

Boutain pleaded guilty to a charge of obstructing official business in Hamilton County, Ohio in 2015.

Kathleen Boutain was treated for minor injuries and taken into custody. ABC4 is working to collect details on the Colorado murder. "Red Butte Canyon. Shelter in Place". The victim had no relation to the couple. Classes were canceled in respect for Guo but police assure the community that the campus is secure and facilities will remain open.

Salt Lake City Police Detective Greg Wilking said Tuesday that 24-year-old Austin Boutain apparently slipped a police containment line after the Monday night slaying.
