IT department search Jayalalithaa's Poes Garden property

Rebel AIADMK leader TTV Dinakaran on Saturday accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi and finance minister Arun Jaitley of orchestrating a series of Income Tax raids including a late-night search at the Chennai residence of former chief minister J Jayalalithaa.

Sources tell Network18 a laptop, a desktop and 4 pen drives have been seized from a room that was being used by Sasikala.

Apsara Reddy, spokesperson of AIADMK's Sasikala faction, said they were not against raids.

This comes just a week after the IT official raided on Sasikala's family members and premises of Jaya TV in Chennai and unearthed an unaccounted income of over Rs 1,400 crore.

Dinakaran, the nephew of jailed AIADMK leader VK Sasikala, also blamed chief minister E Palaniswami and his deputy O Panneerselvam of instigating the Central government to target family members and friends of Sasikala.

No sooner the news about raid on Poes Garden spread, several AIADMK cadres gathered in front of the residence of their beloved leader and started staging protests.

Sasikala and her family and business associates are under scanner for suspect tax evasion and money laundering. They have urged people to remember that Sasikala had been living in the house and the raids were to expose her.

Speaking to reporters in Madurai, around 500 km from here, Palaniswami without naming anybody said due to wrongdoings of some persons the raids had happened at Jayalalithaa's residence.

Jayakumar said Dinakaran is blaming Chief Minister Palaniswami and Deputy Chief Minister O. Panneerselvam for political gains. "We did not allow I-T officials to search Amma's room", said Vivek Jayaraman.

According to him, it was a "limited mission".

Sources said that the raid was carried out following a tip-off that some electronic devices were to be "clandestinely removed" from rooms that VK Sasikala, Jayalalithaa's long-time aide who is now in jail, used during her stay at the Poes Garden home.
