Georgia tops first CFP rankings, followed by Alabama, Notre Dame and Clemson

That loss could prove to be the difference in Penn State reaching the College Football Playoff this season, considering their remaining schedule is not overwhelmingly impressive..

Only five of the 12 teams ranked in the first top four in the first three seasons of the College Football Playoff have made the playoff.

Georgia and Alabama are unbeaten and now on course to meet in the SEC Championship game in Atlanta's Mercedes-Benz Stadium. Georgia won 20-19 at No. 24 Notre Dame on September 9, while Alabama opened September 2 with a 24-7 dumping of No. 3 Florida State in Atlanta, but those two nonconference foes have been heading in opposite directions since. "That gave Georgia the very slight edge over Alabama this week".

"We spent considerable time (Monday) talking about the differences between Georgia and Alabama". Entering Tuesday, the Hokies (7-1, 3-1 ACC) control their own destiny when it comes to the Coastal and, dubbed No. 13 in the rankings by the committee, could vie for one of the playoff spots (if a few dominoes fall in their favor along the way). The Crimson Tide won the four-team playoff over Clemson after the 2015 season and were the runners-up last season.

In the AP Top 25, Ohio State was No. 3, Penn State No. 7 and Oklahoma was No. 8.

Although Alabama has been dominant, it doesn't have a win over a team now ranked in the committee's Top 25.

Georgia and Alabama are each 8-0 overall and 5-0 in conference play, with the Bulldogs winning their five league contests by an average score of 42-10 and the Crimson Tide by 48-8.

But Hocutt said the committee took into consideration that FSU was at "full speed" against Alabama and that "their quarterback participated in that game".

"As you know, we dont look at the other polls", CFP selection committee chairman Kirby Hocutt told ESPNs Rece Davis.

The semifinal winners will meet for the national championship at Mercedes-Benz Stadium on January 8.

Georgia topped Alabama as the highest-ranked undefeated and Notre Dame checked in as the top-ranked one-loss team ahead of Clemson, then Oklahoma, Ohio State, Penn State and TCU.

MI (6-2, 3-2 Big Ten) wasn't a realistic shot to make the first CFP rankings, even though the Top 25 includes 10 teams with two losses.

Its sole mandate is to pick the nation's four best teams, regardless of conference or geography, he said.

Following their week two home loss to the Georgia Bulldogs, many people had already written off the Fighting Irish for this season.
