Ezekiel Elliott's suspension is back on for now

With Ezekiel Elliott presumably out, the Dallas Cowboys will turn to running backs Alfred Morris, Darren McFadden and Rod Smith to carry the load and replace Elliott's heavy production.

As a result, the Cowboys' starting running back is once again in line to serve his six-game suspension, none of which has been served so far.

Barring a last-minute maneuver, Elliott will begin his suspension when the Cowboys visit the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday. The judges rejected Elliott's claims that he would suffer irreparable harm from missing games were he to eventually prevail against the league in court. He's eligible to return in Week 16 versus the Seattle Seahawks. While his legal options aren't exhausted - Thursday's ruling isn't a verdict - Elliott will miss the Cowboys' next six games.

Elliott and the NFLPA next can appeal to the full appeals court and then to the U.S. Supreme Court, if they choose. After the investigation wrapped in August, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell suspended Elliott, saying he violated the league's conduct policy.

The court's ruling allows the NFL to re-suspend Elliott for six games, per NFL Network's legal analyst Gabe Feldman.

Elliott's base salary for the 2017 season is $1,584,379.

The difference this week is that Elliott, the NFL's second-leading rusher, was with his teammates.

A federal appeals court last month tossed out his court challenge in Texas, but the league's request for a NY court to affirm that it had acted properly led to a judge ruling last week that Elliott must begin his suspension.
