Perry was set to perform at the event but was turned away for waving the Taiwanese flag during a 2015 concert in Taipei.

Hadid's withdrawal averts a potential PR disaster for Victoria's Secret, which is hoping to shore up a sagging bottom line by pushing into China's growing intimate-wear market.

Just a few hours before this news broke out, model Gigi Hadid announced that she wouldn't be participating in this year's Victoria's Secret fashion show despite confirming the opposite just a few months back.

"For every artist who wants to perform in China, officials comb through their social media and press reports to see if they have done anything deemed to be offensive to the country", the source told Page Six.

"I'm so bummed I won't be able to make it to China this year", she wrote on Twitter.

Ed Razek, the executive producer of the show, told People magazine that Harry will perform alongside Grammy Award-winning musician Miguel, and Chinese singer and Tony Award-winner, Jane Zhang.

Many believe that Miss Hadid was turned down by the Chinese government after she was caught on video making a racist gesture.

Earlier this year, the model was called out for "discrimination" after a video of her seemingly imitating Buddha's appearance surfaced online.

Representatives for Hadid and Victoria's Secret did not respond to INSIDER's requests for comment about the situation.

The 27-year-old French model made her VS debut in 2016, walking in the Pink section of the show.

The show has previously been filmed in New York City, Cannes, Paris, London, Miami, and Los Angeles. Hadid didn't share any other details but she could be among one of the few models who weren't able to obtain Chinese Visas to make the trip, including Julia Belyakova, Kate Grigorieva and Irina Sharipova from Russian Federation, as well as Dasha Khlystun from Ukraine. Page Six has also reported that Adriana Lima's visa has been delayed due to some diplomatic problem.
