United States adoption agency could be punished for Sherin Mathews death

Wesley Mathews has been charged with injury to a child, a felony punishable with a maximum 99 years in prison, Richardson police said. However, he made the $250,000 bond and, as a condition of his release, Mathews surrendered his passport and agreed to wear an electronic ankle monitoring device.

Mathews, who adopted Sherin from India in June 2016 with his wife, Sini Mathews, was arrested Monday after he voluntarily revised his police statement on what happened to the girl.

During an interview with police, Matthews said that he had been trying to get her to drink the milk as the two stood were in the garage on October 7, but she wouldn't listen to him, police said. On Monday, a day after her body was found, Mathews told police a different story and said that his daughter choked to death after he "physically assisted" her in drinking her milk.

Mathews was initially charged with abandoning or endangering a child when he first reported Sherin missing.

An attorney hired to represent Mrs. Mathews in any criminal defense matters said Wednesday he is no longer working for her.

Sini provided police with dental records, which were used to identify Sherin.

After Sherin was reported gone, the Mathews' 4-year-old biological daughter was placed in foster care. Bond was set at $1 million, Richardson police Sgt. Kevin Perlich said.

Mathews told police he had been trying to get the girl to drink her milk in the garage. He told officers she began choking. However, police said they believe one of the family's cars left the house between 4 a.m. and 5 a.m.

Previously, he told police that he punished the little girl for not drinking her milk by making her stand outside, and that at about 3:15 a.m., discovered her missing.

The cause of death was still pending, the Richardson Police Department said on its Facebook page, citing the Dallas County Medical Examiners Office. De La Garza did not immediately reply to a phone message from The Associated Press.

Investigators combed Sherin's neighborhood and the surrounding area with canine teams and helicopters and executed a search warrant at Mathews' home on October 10, police said.

Wesley Mathews, 37, was re-arrested after the Indian-American changed his story about his adoptive daughter Sherin Mathew's mysterious disappearance over two weeks ago from their home, police in Richardson city in suburban Dallas said. Meanwhile the Nalanda district collector reportedly ordered a probe whether all norms were followed by Wesley Mathews and his wife Sini when they adopted the girl from an orphanage, Mother Teresa Ananth Seva Ashram at Nalanda.
