Real Madrid defeat Espanyol in tough La Liga batle at the Bernabeu

Gareth Bale has been left out of Real Madrid's squad to face Espanyol on Sunday, with the Wales worldwide nursing a calf complaint.

However, after scoring and laying on an assist, he had to leave the field with five minutes remaining with what originally looked to be cramp.

The pair are joined on the sidelines by Theo Hernandez, Karim Benzema, Mateo Kovacic and Marcelo.

"[Bale] has a strain, nothing important", Zidane said.

The injury will also concern Wales, who have two crucial World Cup qualifiers against Georgia and the Republic of Ireland after Madrid face Espanyol. "We will see if Gareth is with us tomorrow", Zidane told a news conference on Saturday. "There is no problem between Madrid and [Wales]".

"It will depend on his injury niggles and his state of fitness, nothing else".

It's not often that RCD Espanyol have the chance to draw level on points with Real Madrid at the end of September, but that is where we find ourselves, as sixth-placed Real Madrid take on their 13th placed visitors.

Espanyol would have themselves to blame for losing the match against Real Madrid as they wasted many chances which would have resulted to goals for them. Zidane's side had previously dropped points to Valencia and Levante at the Santiago Bernabeu before suffering a shock defeat to Real Betis last time out.

We want to keep doing what we've been doing and to win well.

Following La Liga's refusal to abandon the match, Barca made a decision to play behind closed doors as a means of protest.

Zidane was finally asked about Ronaldo's contract renewal, but the 45-year-old refused to comment on the star man.

"I'm not getting involved in that". It is a club issue, a discussion between the club and Cristiano. According to Zizou, it's up to the club to decide and going as per the current relation they both are having, there will be no problems if everything continues to grow in the same manner.

Ronaldo was instrumental again as his surging run created the space for Isco - who started the move by winning possession - to collect Asensio's pass and slide into the bottom corner past Lopez.
