PGA Tour rookie Tyler Duncan keeps lead at Safeway Open

Tyler Duncan finds himself one shot ahead of the chasing pack going into the final round of the Safeway Open after carding an inconsistent round of 71 on Saturday.

Chez Reavie, Lucas Glover, Jamie Lovemark and Argentina's Emiliano Grillo are tied for fourth at 67.

Duncan - a Web.com Tour graduate - had held a share of the first round lead with Steele and Tom Hoge, but followed that up with a stunning end to his second round near the end of the day.

Duncan, whose only previous tour event was the 2015 U.S. Open, had five birdies and four birdies to reach 14-under 202 in the season opener at Silverado Resort and Spa.

"I don't think it's sunk in yet, to be honest", said Duncan. “There are a lot of sections in the greens that youve got to hit into and to hit it into those sections from the rough is pretty challenging.”. The left-hander has not won on the PGA Tour since 2013. "I was in a lot of the fairways, a lot of greens and then made a few putts".

"It was really a solid day, very similar to yesterday", Steele said. It plays really nicely this way.”.

Mickelson, victor of 42 career PGA Tour events including five majors, will be joined at Silverado by 12-time PGA Tour victor Zach Johnson as well as Emiliano Grillo and Adam Hadwin, who also played in the Presidents Cup.

Phil Mickelson, the 42-time PGA Tour victor beginning his 27th PGA Tour season, birdied the 18th from 7 feet for a 69. "So when you feel well, you take a little bit more aggressive lines off the tee".

SHOT OF THE DAY: Leave it to Mickelson to amaze in the first event of the 2017-18 PGA Tour season.

Sang-moon Bae, the 2014 tournament victor, shot 73.

Duncan, making his second career PGA Tour start, had an erratic round. Daly has missed the cut in 12 straight PGA Tour events.
