Mega Millions increasing ticket prices and more than doubling jackpot size

And it's the big jackpots that bring lottery buyers into the game.

The ticket price also will change, moving from $1 to $2.

To win the game's jackpot, players must match five white balls from 1 to 70 and one Mega Ball number from 1 to 25.

The overall odds of winning any prize will also worsen to 1 in 24.

The changes will now put the Mega Millions on equal footing with Powerball.

With the higher prices comes jackpots promised to rise from $15 million to $40 million and better odds to win $1 million prizes and higher secondary prizes, the New Jersey Lottery Commission said in a release. OH is one of six states to initially offer that option.

The move by the multi-state consortium that oversees the game, which is offered in OH and more than 40 other states, is meant to increase jackpots, which will draw more bets.

Mega Millions will also introduce a $3 ticket that gives players two chances at the jackpot, rather than one. The game grew, becoming Mega Millions in May 2002. Mega Millions now is played in 46 jurisdictions: 44 states plus the District of Columbia and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

The $2 ticket price makes it the same price as a Powerball ticket.

The Mega Millions lottery is in for some mega changes.

Jackpots will get bigger much faster.

USA Today calculated that the odds of winning the jackpot will drop from 1 in 258.9 million to 1 in 302.6 millino. The largest Mega Millions payout in history is a $656 million prize split by three winners in Illinois, Kansas and Maryland in 2012.
