Damiao Soares dos Santos, 50, was identified as the man who doused alcohol on a daycare in Janauba and set it on fire with people inside.

"But he said he was there to deliver a medical certificate".

According to the spokesperson the room where the students were trapped has bars on the window and a PVC ceiling which is flammable.

Police spokesman Major Gracielle Rodrigues told CNN a teacher was in a critical condition in hospital, while state media said 20 others had also been injured in the fire, including some children.

Hospitals nearby were overwhelmed by the attack, and five surrounding cities have sent emergency services to aid in the rescue. State police said officers were visiting the suspect's family members to try and determine the motive behind the attack. Local newspapers report he was recently fired from the nursery.

Four toddlers and six adults have been burned alive and 40 people have been injured after a security guard carried out a horrific arson attack at a school in Brazil.

He was taken to hospital with burns to around 90 percent of his body. With only 2 hospitals in the small town of 80,000 people, numerous more seriously hurt were taken by police helicopter to Minas Gerais' capital Belo Horizonte, more than 500 kilometers away. "We have a team of 30 doctors, 30 nurses and 50 nursing technicians to attend to the wounded".

"I deeply regret this tragedy with the children in Jana├║ba (MG)".

Brazilian President Michel Temer expressed his condolences via Twitter.
