Tracking Jose: Jose Still a Hurricane

Hurricane Maria is expected to produce total rain accumulations of 6 to 12 inches with isolated maximum amounts of 20 inches across the central and southern Leeward Islands, including Puerto Rico and the United States and British Virgin Islands, through Wednesday night. The storm, which had maximum sustained winds of almost 80 mph, was 550 miles southeast of Cape Hatteras, North Carolina.

The National Hurricane Center is monitoring two more disturbances in the Atlantic Ocean.

Hurricane Jose is now joined by Hurricane Maria and Tropical Storm Lee. The US Virgin Islands, which took a devastating hit from Hurricane Irma, is under a hurricane watch ahead of Hurricane Maria.

"Tropical storm force wind gusts will also be likely, in excess of 40 miles per hour", Dixon said. (Gusts could exceed 40 miles per hour, especially on eastern Long Island, if the storm tracks slightly more west.) It will also bring rain, with about 1-3 inches of rainfall expected for much of the Island.

From there it may move towards Puerto Rico or Hispaniola as a hurricane or even potentially as a major hurricane. Water vapor imagery also shows dry air pushing into the southern half of the storm.

"Tropical storm or hurricane watches could be issued for portions of the Lesser Antilles on Saturday", the National Hurricane Center said in its update at 2 p.m. ET Friday.

Hurricane warnings were posted for the U.S. and British Virgin Islands, Guadeloupe, Dominica, St. Kitts, Nevis, Montserrat, Martinique and St. Lucia. By Thursday Jose will be much weaker and will be pulling further east away from the New England coast.

Tropical storm watches may be needed for parts of that area during the next few days. We are tracking Tropical Depression Lee in the far eastern Atlantic.

Hurricane-force winds extend outward up to 60 miles from the center and tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 185 miles.

Jose is a Category 1 storm spinning about 480 miles south-southeast of Cape Hatteras, North Carolina.
