Two die in natural disaster on Italian island

There were reports of a number of people injured in the quake, which took place at the height of the summer tourist season.

The quake struck at 8:57 p.m. local time at a depth of about 5 km off Ischia, which lies in the Gulf of Naples, the Italian National Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (INGV) said.

Three extra ferries were provided during the night for about 1,000 residents and tourists who wanted to leave.

Italian officials first put the quake at a 3.6 magnitude, but later revised it upward to 4.0 - in seismic terms, a modest event. As indicated by Ermanno Mennella of the Federablberghi hoteliers relationship in Ischia, only 10 of the island's 310 lodgings had been affected by the shudder and just three or four were shut by it.

The quake comes just two days before the one-year anniversary of a powerful 6.2-magnitude natural disaster that devastated several towns in central Italy, killing almost 300 people.

The baby's two older brothers were rescued hours later. Authorities said at least 39 people were injured. One woman was killed by falling masonry from a church that had suffered damage in a quake centered in Casamicciola in 1883 that killed more than 2,000 people.

Rescue workers searched the rubble for survivors through the night.

Ischia's only hospital was also hit and had to be partially evacuated, with five patients transferred to another medical facility by helicopter. The church was rebuilt after it, like most of Casamicciola was destroyed by an quake that killed some 2,000 people in 1883.

The Italian bishops' television station, TV2000, said the destroyed church was Santa Maria dei Suffragio, more commonly known as the "Purgatory Church".

He says one woman was killed and seven people are unaccounted for.

Some civil protection squads were already on the island because of brushfires.

Firefighters carried out the rescue on the resort island of Ischia.
