Fatah Official: Jared Kushner's Mideast Peace Mission Is a 'Delusion'

"Both sides agreed to continue with the US-led conversations as the best way to reach a comprehensive peace deal".

But the USA delegation refrained from committing to a two-state solution - the primary focus of peace efforts for decades.

"The Palestinian Authority and the USA delegation had a productive meeting focused on how to begin substantive Israeli-Palestinian peace talks", the United States and the PA said in a joint statement issued after the Ramallah talks.

Most notably in a meeting with leftist Israeli lawmakers last week, Abbas noted that he'd met Trump's envoys "about 20 times" but they had failed to convey a commitment to a two-state solution to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, according to leaked comments.

President Trump's son-in-law and senior adviser Jared Kushner led last week's mission, with the delegation also including Jason Greenblatt, envoy for worldwide negotiations, and deputy national security adviser Dina Powell.

However, Abbas stressed that negotiations should be based on the framework of a two-state solution and for illegal settlements to cease.

The US team is attempting to find a way to kick-start the Israeli-Palestinian peace process in hopes of reaching what Trump has called the "ultimate deal". Kushner heard out the Palestinian leader's demands and postponed any responses for the next meeting they have.

"If the USA team doesn't bring answers to our questions this time, we are going to look into our options because the status quo is not working for our interests", Ahmad Majdalani, an aide to Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, told The Associated Press.

The US delegation also purportedly informed the Palestinians that it would work towards advancing economic, security and diplomatic collaboration between the sides before initiating direct peace talks.

Aloul criticized Kushner's delegation, stating, "Judging from the latest meetings, the delegates didn't bring anything new with them and didn't present any initiative".

They have also held talks with Egyptian, Saudi, Emirati, Qatari and Jordanian officials.

"We have told the Americans that we are committed to the American effort،" Khatib said.

"While Netanyahu keeps putting up obstacles to avoid getting to the negotiating table for fear that his government will collapse, Abbas wants to move forward because he is under growing domestic pressure", he said.
