Cleveland Clinic, University Hospitals ranked among best hospitals in the country

U.S. News & World Report says that UPMC Presbyterian in Shadyside is the 14th best hospital in the nation.

Mayo has finished atop the rankings both times since that conversation as U.S. News continues to tinker with its methodology. This year, UCH has earned the position of No. 15 on the annual U.S. News Best Hospitals Honor Roll, moving up five positions from last year's ranking.

The Mayo Clinic in Minnesota took the coveted No. 1 ranking in the assessment of hospitals released Tuesday, while the Cleveland Clinic ranked second.

Michigan Medicine was followed in the state rankings by Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak, which earned rankings in 9 adult specialty categories.

The rankings draw more than 1 million people per month to the publication's website, he said.

U.S. News rankings incorporate measures such as patient volume, nursing staffing levels, patient survival, advanced technology and hospital reputation based on a nationwide physician survey.

"I am proud to be part of an organization that is honored nationally, year after year, for delivering exemplary healthcare services to the Greater Houston community", said Chuck Stokes, President and CEO of Memorial Hermann Health System. The University of Maryland Medical Center was ranked the state's second-best hospital. Minnesota's Mayo Clinic kept its perch at No. 1 from a year ago, followed respectively by the Cleveland Clinic and Johns Hopkins Hospital.

As Colorado's only adult academic medical center, University of Colorado Hospital provides clinical trials and innovative treatments through a strong partnership with the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus.

Lancaster General Hospital ranked sixth statewide, recognized as high-performing in nine procedures or conditions. Nationally ranked specialties are: cancer (18th nationally); cardiology and heart surgery (39th); gastroenterology and GI surgery (7th); geriatrics (26th); neurology and neurosurgery (34th); ear, nose and throat (50th); and pulmonology (17th).

This year, Mayo officials also celebrated out west as the Phoenix campus finished No. 20 in a report that examined more than 4,500 medical centers across the country.

"A change in performance over time doesn't necessarily reflect a change in a hospital's quality of care", he said.

Aspirus Wausau Hospital in Wausau was ranked No.4 in the state; St. Mary's Hospital in Madison was ranked No. 5; and Mercy Hospital and Trauma Center tied for No. 6 with Aurora Medical Center in Grafton. The Brigham was ranked 13th overall previous year. Still, the move up is indicative of the Markey Cancer Center's continued emphasis on providing exemplary care as the state's only National Cancer Institute (NCI)-designated center.
