Nathan DeVault with the American Red Cross National Capital Region said about 18 volunteers have been deployed to either Texas or Louisiana.

The government's medical preparations come as President Trump prepares to face his first natural disaster as president.

Six Red Cross volunteers from Hawaiʻi are deploying to assist with relief operations in Texas following impacts associated with Hurricane Harvey.

"I'm nervous, I haven't really done anything of this high an impact yet", says Michelle Kaufman, a Red Cross volunteer.

Western Massachusetts is represented among the Red Cross volunteers from all over the country doing humanitarian work in the hurricane ravaged areas of Texas.

One day after Harvey made landfall in Texas as a Category 4 hurricane, a team from Miami-Dade Fire Rescue is driving from South Florida to help with search-and-rescue efforts.

They expect to be on the assignment for 2 weeks.

The Red Cross estimates 30,000 people will need a shelter in coming days.

"This is a city that trains for this kind of event, plans for this kind of event, and unfortunately we've also had some experience with these kinds of events, so we're ready", Adler said.

"If this storm does what they are predicting, which is just sit in the area and dump rain, it is going to be catastrophic flooding". "Now more than ever, we need people in the community to step up and help their neighbors in need by becoming a Red Cross disaster volunteer and to provide relief for our current volunteers".

A total 26 people from Colorado and Wyoming left Friday ahead of the storm to assist in rescue and recovery efforts, according to Bill Fortune, Regional Communications Specialist with the American Red Cross.
