PLA can defeat all invading armies, says Xi Jinping

The Army Day parade Sunday demonstrated the achievements of China's military reform, said Han Weiguo, commander-in-chief of the parade.

Chinese President Xi Jinping told the military yesterday to transform itself into an elite force, as he oversaw a parade with flybys of advanced jets and a mass rally of troops to mark 90 years since the founding of the People's Liberation Army.

Xi Jinping, general secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, state president and chairman of the Central Military Commission, and other senior leaders Li Keqiang, Zhang Dejiang, Yu Zhengsheng, Liu Yunshan, Wang Qishan and Zhang Gaoli joined about 3,000 people to watch the gala at the Great Hall of the People.

The parade is a lively political education for all the servicemen, and a comprehensive test of their will and character, he said.

"The world is far from tranquil and peace needs to be safeguarded", Xi said in a speech.

"Officers and soldiers, you must unswervingly stick to the fundamental principle and system of the Party's absolute leadership over the Army, always listen to and follow the Party's orders, and march to wherever the Party points to", said Xi.

Clad in camouflage military suit, 64-year-old Xi stood in an open-roof jeep that drove slowly past formations of troops as military music was being played through loudspeaker.

Xi said the world was facing conflict, but he did not mention North Korea or the U.S. China insists it is not preparing for war, but must overhaul its military to defend its borders and interests.

It was also the first time Xi has reviewed troops in the field like this, Xinhua added.

In the military parade on Sunday, around 12,000 troops participated while 129 aircraft and 571 pieces of equipment were on display.

He urged the army to implement the Communist Party of China's thoughts on building a strong military, follow the path of strengthening the army with Chinese characteristics, and build the army into a world-class military.

In 2015, Xi, who favours a lean army, announced a reduction of 300,000 troops.

The PLA, originally called the Chinese Workers' and Peasants' Red Army, was founded in 1927.
