Multiple people shot at Bronx-Lebanon Hospital Center

Police said the shooter opened fire on the 16th and 17th floors of the Bronx-Lebanon Hospital around 3 p.m.

The NYPD says the gunman at a New York City hospital is dead.

The New York City mayor tweeted saying he was aware of the situation. The Times also reports that the shooter is a tall, thin man wearing a lab coat, citing an NYPD radio transmission. Emergency crews had been kept from going inside the hospital while the shooter was at large.

The 120-year-old hospital has almost 1,000 beds and one of the busiest emergency rooms in New York City.

The New York Times said five or six people may have been wounded.

Gunfire broke out at 2.50pm local time, with police cars and firetrucks rushing to the scene.

Multiple people were shot, though the extent of their injuries was not immediately known, according to police. The hospital is around 120-year-old and claims that there are almost 1,000 beds spread across multiple units.

Police had no immediate information on whether anyone was killed.
