Military plane crash kills 16

Julian Kevianne, 31, a Marine sergeant from Detroit, was among the 16 people killed Monday when a US military plane crashed in MS, the Detroit Free Press reports.

Air traffic control lost contact with the KC-130 refueling tanker that left from SC around 4 p.m. local time.

Local media reported Monday that the KC-130 had crashed in a soybean field in central MS, with at least 16 bodies pulled from the wreckage.

The accident took place around 16 h, and the firemen had to intervene to extinguish the fire, indicates for its part the local newspaper the Clarion-Ledger.

At a Wednesday news conference in Itta Bena, Commissioner Marshall Fisher said the Federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives, as well as federal prosecutors in Northern Mississippi, are investigating. Six of the Marines and the Navy sailor were from Marine Corps Special Operations Command (MARSOC), according to the statement. "We know we had some ammunition rounds to ignite".

LeFlore County deputy coroner Will Gnemi says the crash site was in a rural area, and emergency services were scouring the thick soybean crops for bodies. "Further information will be released as available", the Marines posted to Twitter.

"While the details of the incident are being investigated, our focus remains on providing the necessary resources and support to the family and friends of these service members as they go through this extremely hard time", she said. "Our men and women in uniform risk themselves every day to secure our freedom".

The KC-130J Hercules aircraft is used for "air-to-air refueling, rapid ground refueling and logistic support", including transportation of troops or cargo, according to a Navy fact sheet.
