GRAPHIC: Five Beheaded in Acapulco Prison Riot amid DHS Secretary Visit

Officials initially gave a death toll of five and indicated that the riot was limited to the maximum-security wing.

"The incident [was] caused by permanent struggle between opposing groups inside the prison", the official said in a statement posted on his Facebook page.

Despite reports of gunfire in the prison, all the casualties were due to wounds from sharp instruments, such as the improvised weapons that are fashioned by inmates, Alvarez said.

Once they regained control of the prison, authorities found corpses throughout the wing, including in and around the kitchen and in an area reserved for conjugal visits.

Relatives of inmates confront state police securing the area around the state prison in Acapulco, Mexico, Thursday, July 6, 2017.

Some desperate relatives tore down a section of the prison's fence trying to get to their loved ones.

Mexico's prisons are often cited as being overcrowded and unsafe, with some certain facilities are often run by gangs and inmates themselves.

Soon after the riot started, prison guards reported hearing gunshots inside the compound. While Acapulco is one of the Mexico's best-known beach resorts, it has been embroiled in gang warfare and ranked one of the world's most murderous cities, according to Voice of America.

The riot is thought to be the deadliest in Mexican history and broke out when supporters of two separate drug gangs, Zeta 27 and Gulf Cartel, starting fighting.

Inmates have de facto control over many of Mexico's jails.

Opium poppy production has been a major source of concern to United States officials.

At a penitentiary in Monterrey, northern Mexico, in February, rival drug gangs were at the center of a brawl that left 49 inmates dead and several more injured.
