Cops will love Ford's F-150 Police Responder pickup

Other US Ford law enforcement vehicles include the Special Service F-150 and Expedition, the market-leading Police Interceptor Sedan and Utility, Special Service Police Sedan and Transit Prisoner Transport Vehicle and the Police Responder Hybrid Sedan - America's first pursuit-rated hybrid police auto.

The F-150 Police Responder joins a robust lineup of law enforcement vehicles that includes Police Interceptor series-the Taurus-based sedan and Explorer-based Interceptor SUV-the Fusion Hybrid-based Responder Hybrid Sedan, as well as Prisoner Transport Transit Van.

Ford said the truck offers more power and torque than any other pursuit-rated police vehicle. It also has a top speed of 100 miles per hour, a front stabilizer bar for improved handling police-calibrated brake calipers and pads for speedy responses. A standard class IV hitch gives F-150 Police Responder towing capability of 7,000 lb.

It's hooked up to Ford's new 10-speed auto, with the addition of four-wheel drive in case the baddies decide to go bush. The back seats and floor are covered in heavy-duty vinyl so that nasty messes can be cleaned up easily. An upfit-ready interior features a column shifter with center-seat delete, heavy-duty cloth front seats with slim bolsters and anti-stab plates, vinyl rear seating, and heavy-duty vinyl flooring for easy cleanup. Additionally, this police pickup will have a high-output 240-volt alternator to run the communications and database equipment different law enforcement agencies use. The latter - and the fuel used while police vehicles sit stationary but with the engine turned on - has come under renewed focus in recent years, for both environmental and cost reasons.

Ford expects it to be popular with not only rural sheriff's departments but for border patrol operations and among the Department of Natural Resources when it hits the streets this fall.

Brake, wheel and tire upgrades further toughen the F-150 for police work.
