Xbox Backwards Compatibility - Microsoft deal big blow to Xbox One owners

At the E3 event that took place on Sunday, Microsoft has finally revealed their secret hardware for the Scorpio Project.

While the debate on whether or not the Xbox One X is really worth $499 continues, Xbox head Phil Spencer revealed that Microsoft will not be making money for the Xbox One X units that will be sold.

"I look at [PS4] Pro as more of a competitor to [Xbox One] S than I do to Xbox One X. This is a true 4K console", Spencer told Eurogamer. But let's have a look at the differences between the two.

The Xbox One X also has a superior optical drive, as the new unit comes equipped with a 4K/HDR capable Blu-ray drive, compared to the PlayStation 4 Pro which comes with an older Blu-ray/DVD drive.

As for the PS4 Pro, it comes with an AMD Polaris graphics with 4.2 teraflops of performance and 8GB of GDDR5 RAM.

This sentiment was shared by Joost van Dreunen of Superdata, who said: "As expected, the new device's price point is the most obvious weakness, giving Sony an opportunity to drop its current PlayStation 4 Pro to $350 and raise the stakes". "But I will say price is critical".

Microsoft repeatedly mentioned that Xbox One X would be a premium console for a segment of consumers looking for 4K games.

Will you be picking one up later this year?

Spencer stated that Xbox fans should keep their expectations in check regarding the library of Original Xbox Games coming to Xbox One because only a select few Original Xbox Games will be available to backward compatibility program because of Rights issue And Emulation difficulty (technically it's a bit difficult). He also said that he was spending a lot of time on Microsoft's first-party games, and that they've already "signed some things" that they haven't announced yet.

"I don't want to get into all the numbers", Spencer went on to say, "but in aggregate, you should think about the hardware part of the console business is not the money-making part of the business".
