Two boys, ages 16 and 17, also were charged in the Pill Hill neighborhood shooting, but their names were not released due to their age.

Two children have been shot at an elementary school playground in Chicago, but authorities don't believe their injuries are life-threatening. "They are very best place for our children to be, both during school and during after school programs", he added.

Police say students and teachers were celebrating at the Warren Elementary School playground on the 9200 block of S. Jeffery Ave. when three suspended male students tried to attend, but were kicked out by security. Eddie Johnson said at a press conference outside the school. Police said they were not the intended targets. "They deserve their childhood uninterrupted by a bunch of gangbangers", Emanuel said.

"I would hope for once, when people say enough is enough ... that the justice system understands that enough is enough".

Police pulled over a black Jeep - now known to have been reported stolen - about 10 minutes after the shooting in the 8900 block of South Phillips, police said.

Stephaney Branch, Khia's mother, said she felt "disbelief, but not surprise", and was "seriously looking into home schooling". The Chicago Public Schools website describes it as "a magnet cluster school with a focus on math and science".

Hart immediately drove back to Chicago - a 60-mile trip - in 45 minutes.

Police say the shooting happened outside Warren Elementary School in an area on Chicago's South Side.

"This should make everyone angry", Johnson said. Mayor Rahm Emanuel arrived at the hospital to visit with the victims and their families shortly before 3:30 p.m.
