Opposition's presidential nominee Meira Kumar joins Twitter

Upon being questioned about the Janata Dal United (JDU) supporting NDA's presidential candidate Ramnath Kovind, the former Lok Sabha Speaker said the she will ponder upon it at the right time. While acknowledging the lack of JD (U)'s support, Meira Kumar maintained that it was common in politics. Earlier on Sunday, Swaraj had hit out at Kumar over latter's treatment of the Opposition during UPA regime in 2013.

The 75-year-old Kumar is the joint opposition candidate of 17 non-NDA parties against the ruling NDA's nominee Ram Nath Kovind.

"Many time in history, two high caste leaders have competed for the post of the President but there haven't been any discussions on their caste".

Kumar will begin her campaign from Sabarmati Ashram on the outskirts of Ahmedabad after she files her nomination tomorrow.

Kumar, who will be starting her election campaign from Sabarmati Ashram in Gujarat, also said that she had already written letters to all members of the electoral college to ask for their support.

In Presidential elections where the legislators do not have to follow any whip, Kumar said, "I would appeal to everyone to listen to the inner voice of one's conscience not paying attention to any other consideration". "Our society should progress", she said.

"But when Dalits contest, their caste is being discussed and their virtues become subordinate". It is the place which is associated with Mahatma Gandhi who shook the empire through truth and non-violence and "I want to derive strength" from his ideology, she said.

"This election is being fought on ideology and not on caste. This makes me think that caste should be buried deep in the ground and society should move forward", Meira Kumar added.

"Leaders of every opposition party will get an opportunity to propose or second the nomination of Meira Kumar, their joint candidate", said a senior Congress leader.

Responding to these allegations, Meira Kumar called them baseless and said they were being raised to tarnish her image.
