Ken gets makeover: Cornrows, beefy bod and new skin tones

The dolls extend Barbie's Fashionista line, which now runs to 40 dolls, representing seven body types, 11 skin tones and 28 hairstyles, the company said.

The makeovers are long overdue, though it's interesting that Ken is completely devoid of facial hair - and tattoos, both of which are major men's trends.

Buyers can choose Ken dolls with three body types, seven skin tones, eight hair colors, nine hairstyles and modernized fashions, ranging from casual business attire to athletic wear.

All will be available by the holidays.

These new looks definitely stray far from 1961 Ken, but designers see it as a refreshing new take on the infamous doll.

Physique: Ken will be sold in three body shapes: "slim, ' "broad" and "original". Early a year ago, Mattel announced that it was creating three new body types for its dolls to reflect the look of real-life girls and women. Stepping away from classic Ken's boring side-part, the new Kens sport hip styles like cornrows and the trendy buzzed-on-the-sides, shaggy-on-top look. In addition to the 15 new Ken dolls, there are now 25 more diverse Barbie dolls in the Fashionistas line.

His long-term partner gets all the attention for her looks, but now the iconic Ken doll is getting a makeover. Now, the storied toy company is adding 15 diverse Ken dolls to its lineup.

Ten of the Ken dolls are on sale today and an additional five more will be available in the coming months. The dolls also boast cool fashions and styles for a new generation. Mattel's portfolio of global consumer brands includes American Girl®, Barbie®, Fisher-Price®, Hot Wheels®, Monster High® and Thomas & Friends™, among many others.
