Heathrow has asked its passengers, who were forced to travel without their luggage, to contact their respective airlines to find out when it would be returned to them.

'We are now investigating the issue.

After the issue had been resolved, British Airways informed passengers that they were working to get bags left behind at Heathrow to their final destination in the coming days.

BA shareholders meet in Madrid today and will no doubt have some tough questions for the airline's management team.

Rachel Jackson tweeted: "Just found out that despite checking in 3 hours early bag not on flight disgusted what are you doing about it Heathrow Airport?".

The failure is having much more impact on British Airways than any other airline, because it has the large majority of flights from the affected terminals.

Zoe Morrison wrote on Twitter: '@britishairways let us down again @HeathrowAirport- no baggage being loaded this morning and no information for passengers'.

During that time, passengers were instructed to place essential items from their luggage into their carry-on bags.

Other terminals were not affected and the problems did not extend to worldwide passengers flying into London.

Over the May bank holiday, BA's IT system collapsed, cancelling hundreds of flights and disrupting the travel plans of tens of thousands of passengers.

Out of fifty airlines worldwide, Israel's national carrier El Al was rated the worst airliner for noise, efficiency, and eco-friendliness, according to a list compiled by London's Heathrow Airport.
