Alexandria police report that five victims were transported to hospitals.

The lawyer said he was greeting friend and colleague U.S. Rep. Trent Kelly, R-Mississippi, on the infield just before the shots rang out from near the third base side.

Investigators said they found anti-Trump messages on the shooter's Facebook social media page.

"Steve loves and passionately looks forward to that congressional baseball game", Jason Hebert, a Republican consultant who worked with the majority whip, told the New York Times.

U.S. Rep. Martha Roby, R-Montgomery, was in Washington, D.C., on Wednesday morning when top House Republican, Steve Scalise of Louisiana, was shot by a rifle-wielding gunman, but she was not in the area where the shooting took place.

Alexandria Police officials tweeted that the shooting occurred in the 400 block of East Monroe Street. The audio recording, with portions trimmed of dead air, runs for about 10 minutes.

Scalise, a congressional staffer and two law enforcement officials suffered gunshot wounds after the shooter opened fire on Republican members of Congress on the baseball field in Alexandria, Virginia.

Scalise underwent surgery, and was listed as being in critical condition, according to the hospital.

Scalise is stable and is expected to make a full recovery. She said the shooting "went on for quite a while".

Rep. Mo Brooks, R-Ala., said several other people also were hit, including two law enforcement officers.

"He was dragging his body from second base", Brooks said.

A Texas congressman says the gunman first fired shots at Kelly and missed.

McSally, a Republican from Arizona, said "we can't let anyone stop us from doing our work and from standing together".

McConnell expressed gratitude for the Capitol Police officers on the scene, as well as other first responders.

"Please join me in praying for quick healing for Steve, the police officers, and the Congressional aide who were injured". Brooks says Rep. Brad Wenstrup, a podiatrist who served as a combat surgeon in Iraq, used scissors to cut Scalise's trousers to get to his wound.

The Vice President and I are aware of the shooting incident in Virginia and are monitoring developments closely.
