GOP senators now oppose health care bill as written

Sen. Susan Collins (R-ME) on Sunday said she has "very serious concerns" about Senate Republicans' bill to repeal and replace Obamacare, and has a hard time imagining that the bill will pass in the week ahead. It's the first step in a massive redistribution of wealth from struggling wage-earners to the rich - a theft of historic proportions.

"The health care bill would be so great if the Democrats and Republicans could get together, wrap their arms around it so that everybody is happy with it", Trump complained on the "Fox and Friends" program, in a previously taped interview broadcast early today.

Fundamentally, this bill lacks heart. No, it doesn't. The devil is not in the details, it's in the big picture. A number of other centrist senators-including Rob Portman and Shelley Moore Capito-have also voiced concerns about the Senate's cuts to Medicaid.

Under Obamacare, formally known as the Affordable Care Act, states were eligible to expand their Medicaid programs - providing health insurance to low-income people. "But I think we're going to get it". In 2016, the expansion accounted for 43 percent of Ohio's Medicaid spending on behavioral health, a category that includes substance abuse treatment, according to the Associated Press.

Why would Republicans want to slash this vital program so severely? "Whether we have a hearing or not, this thing needs to be fully vetted", he continued. It also would provide more generous tax subsidies than the House bill to help low-income people buy private insurance.

Yesterday, shortly after the release of the Senate bill, he tweeted, "It's the ugly step-sibling of the House bill".

All so that the richest people in our country will get a huge tax cut!

There is no other point to this whole exercise.

The ACA is far from flawless, but recall that it was designed with input from the insurance industry.

Heller is the fifth GOP senator to declare his opposition.

Molina Healthcare Inc, which has more than 1 million customers in Obamacare plans, said in a statement that dropping the individual mandate with no replacement provision will lead healthy people to forgo coverage and thus drive up premium rates.

It's actually a wonder that the ACA works as well as it does, given the GOP's determination to make it fail.

Under the Senate's bill, titled the Better Care Reconciliation Act, that expansion would be phased out, meaning those who gained coverage through the expansion would be without once again, though they could access coverage through the individual insurance market.

Andy Slavitt understands the inner workings of the US health care system better than most.

- Restricts subsidies that help lower-income families afford premiums. Like the House, the Senate wants to eliminate the requirement that large employers offer insurance plans to their workers. "I hope they're being genuine about that". If you're poorer, older, or sicker?

Lynch said the shift in Medicaid funding - from 50-50 state and federal funding to roughly 70 percent funded by states - will be particularly devastating to states that took advantage of Obamacare's Medicaid expansion in recent years, including MA, saying: "Medicaid expansion, that'll kill MA".

This pig's lipstick is being applied with a trowel.

Where would Gary go if Medicaid services were cut?

The Nevada senator joins four other Republicans in expressing opposition to the draft bill as it is now written. Wavering senators should know that we're not fooled. His work appears on Saturdays on PennLive.
