French Open to start with Petra Kvitova's return to court

"For the first time in nine years at Roland Garros, I played my singles on Philippe Chatrier!".

In a record 20th appearance at the French Open, Venus Williams eased into the second round with a straight-set victory over Qiang Wang of China. It felt weird but great, as well.

Tsitsipas, who will turn 19 in August, played for the first time in the main draw after coming through qualifying. "It was the best play I did in five-and-a-half months".

Wawrinka, 32, eased into the final by seeing off Russian world No. 85 Andrey Kuznetsov 6-3, 7-6 (7-4). Of course there's a few things to improve but that's expected after such a long time out and I'm really happy. It is a special grand slam because I grew up playing on clay courts. "So I'm happy that I can be here".

"At the beginning, I had this hand in a splint, and even then I was practising every day, always putting the splint away and trying to make this scar softer".

Sixth-seeded Dominic Thiem is safely through to the second round of the French Open.

Kerber's strokes were off against Makarova, who has reached two major semifinals but never been past the fourth round in Paris.

With Grigor Dimitrov leading 6-2, 6-3 against Stephane Robert, a picture was posted with the caption: "No. 11 Dimitrov d".

Can Dimitrov end his Paris losing streak?

With Kerber defeated, the World No.1 ranking can change hands after the French Open. I did miss definitely on the court, I did miss the fight.

Former champion Svetlana Kuznetsova has beaten Christina McHale of the United States in straight sets to reach the second round of the French Open. Kvitova produced 31 winners whilst the 25-year-old got 9 winners. "The hand is good - and also the head", her brother Jiri said.

Angelique Kerber has not been playing at all like someone ranked No. 1 this season, and on Sunday she became the first woman seeded No. 1 to lose in the French Open's first round in the professional era. Leading 5-2 into her service, Makarova sealed the victory with a powerful forehand to deny Kerber's quest for the Suzanne Lenglen trophy.

Kerber showed some signs of getting into the match, smacking a cross-court forehand passing victor, leaning forward and yelling as she took a game to get within 3-1. She underwent surgery hours after the attack and began rehabilitative therapy two days later, with a focus on keeping her fingers mobile to prevent stiffness.

One of the hot topics at Roland Garros this year has been the return of Andre Agassi. As a youngster, Wawrinka cheered for Agassi's biggest rival.

"I'm obviously excited to be back", Muguruza said at the draw ceremony.

Mixing winners and unforced errors in nearly equal measure, Kvitova had three break points to go 4-0 up but Boserup saw them off, although she could not fully overturn the advantage. "I'm really glad that we made this decision that I'm going to play here", Kvitova told the crowd during an on-court interview.

Kvitova said she isn't fully recovered but is ready to return to competitive tennis. "I'm really looking forward to my match".

Kvitova began things with a quick forehand victor; she compiled the first 10 winners of the match and finished with a 31-9 edge in that category. In between those results were less impressive outings such as second-round exit at Sydney, round-of-16 defeat as the Australian Open defending champion, a first-round ending at Doha, and most recently, an opening-round (second round after a first round bye) at Rome.

The 27-year-old, a two-time Wimbledon victor, suffered a severe injury to her left hand during a burglary at her home in December.
