'Batman' star Adam West dies at 88

Adam West's tongue-in-cheek earnestness, solemn baritone voice and camp posture as the Caped Crusader were the flawless accompaniment to the comic book bubbles that proclaimed "Wham! Pow!"

Batman's sidekick was Robin the Boy Wonder, who as Dick Grayson was Bruce Wayne's ward.

"This is a terribly unexpected loss of my lifelong friend", Burt Ward, who played Robin on the series, said in a statement in Variety. As of now, the internet is abuzz with several tributes to the 88-year-old actor, including posts from actors who have taken up the Bat-mantle. "I mean, how many actors are lucky enough to play a character that becomes iconic?"

In recent years he voiced a cartoon version of himself as Mayor West in the long-running animated series "Family Guy".

"I knew after 20 pages it was the kind of thing, the kind of comedy, I wanted to do", he said.

She said in a statement: "Stellar, exemplar, a king to the end".

After serving in the Army, he went to Hollywood and changed his name to Adam West, and began appearing on a number of television series, including "Bonanza", "Perry Mason" and "Bewitched". Batman and Robin were almost turned into frozen desserts - Frosty Freezies - in an episode with famed film director Otto Preminger as Mr Freeze. "Watching those reruns every day after school, Batman made reading comics that much more real for me growing up".

"He knows that I am Batman", Affleck said, referring to his son.

He had smaller parts in a number of TV shows and movies prior to his life-changing role as the Dark Knight.

Born William West Anderson in Walla Walla, Wash., the chisel-jawed West moved to Hollywood in 1959 and got his feet wet with Western TV series like "Bonanza" and "Overland Trail".

Pre-Batman, he co-starred in the 1965 Three Stooges feature film The Outlaws Is Coming and the 1964 sci-fi film Robinson Crusoe on Mars. With varying degrees of success, film studios and TV production companies attempted to generate their own superhero fare, all chasing the kind of omnipresent zeitgeist that the ABC series generated.

It's understood that West died peacefully surrounded by his family and is survived by his wife Marcelle, six children, five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Loved the show as a kid, still love the show now. POW!
