Ansel Elgort relished learning sign language for Baby Driver role

[Wright] said that's what won me the role: just seeing me jam out to something while also being freaked out about this dude being dead. Yet the film approaches the theme from a different angle, presenting in Baby not a stunted man-child, but a boy forced to grow up too soon, who's on a quest for innocence rather than one to shed it.

Lily James and Ansel Elgort seemed to be enjoying London's soaring temperatures as they joked around on the red carpet at the London premiere of Baby Driver.

Elgort plays Baby, the baddest mob driver ever to put pedal to the metal on the streets of Atlanta.

Jon Hamm, left, Eiza Gonzalez, Ansel Elgort and Jamie Foxx star in the heist film "Baby Driver".

While promoting his new movie, Baby Driver, on Variety's Playback podcast, Wright said "I think the most diplomatic answer is I wanted to make a Marvel movie but I don't think they really wanted to make an Edgar Wright movie".

Everyone in Elgort's accomplished family has a high-profile arts career - his father, for example, is famed fashion photographer Arthur Elgort - so celebrity is familiar, apparently neither carrot nor stick. I'd like to do a franchise movie if I thought I could make it my own, the way Sam Mendes and Roger Deakins did (with Bond movie Skyfall).

The result is a film that began earning praise from the minute it debuted in March at the South by Southwest film, music and interactive festival in Austin, Texas. "I'd think, 'This would be the ideal vehicle chase song in a movie, but what's the movie?'"

"He picks the team, of which Baby is always on the team, he hasn't done a job in a while without Baby driving".

"I feel like every stop I made had one of those 1950s diners like in the film", he says. Let me have one. I'm glad we only had to do two days of filming there. So they didn't have to worry about Lily being there. The offensive song to him was Guns "N Roses" "Knockin' on Heaven's Door" cover, but the "hex song" in "Baby Driver" comes from a tune Jamie Foxx actually detests: the Eagles' "Hotel California".

Wright said: "Not really".

"Yeah, well, at first we just talked about music in general". It's usually just through sheer exhaustion and insomnia, because it's that point in the middle of the movie where I'm getting less than five hours' sleep and I'm just in an absolutely bleak mood.

Then there are the action scenes, which aren't so much John Woo or Jerry Bruckheimer as Busby Berkeley; the music constantly playing on Baby's iPod provides the groove for the whole film, with gunfire, tyre squeals and crashes all precisely - and engrossingly - edited to the beat of Wright's jukebox soundtrack.

"And that song made its way into the movie".

Edgar Wright has opened up about the "heartbreaking" decision to depart Ant-Man when Marvel bosses wanted to pen a script without him.

"I wanted to do Broadway very badly". Foxx is particularly strong, as he keeps Bats just on the fine line between sanity and insanity.

"I loved Gino's for dinner". I said, 'I want to do that!' and my mom said, 'OK, the first step is to learn how to dance. I knew it was going to be tough because when I had done auto scenes before, they were usually the most frustrating experiences.
