Tesla reports record deliveries of vehicles in 1st quarter

According to NASDAQ, this is the highest Q1 on record for Tesla, and it's about a 69 percent increase over the same period in 2016.

In addition to Q1 deliveries, about 4,650 vehicles were in transit to customers at the end of the quarter.

CEO Elon Musk recently said that the first batch of Tesla Model 3s will have rear-wheel drive instead of all-wheel drive, with AWD models coming after six to nine months.

Tesla announced today that it squeaked past its own quarterly production and delivery records with "just over" 25,000 cars delivered in the first quarter of 2017.

Tesla had not projected Q1 deliveries previously, but did say it expected to deliver 47,000 to 50,000 units in the first half of 2017.

Breaking down deliveries by model type, Tesla indicated that the Model S accounted for 13,450 deliveries while the Model X accounted for 11,550 deliveries. Analysts expect another loss for the first quarter. While Tesla hasn't given investors guidance on how many cars it plans to deliver in 2017, Mr. Musk has said it aims to make 500,000 cars in 2018 - an aggressive goal that hinges on battery-cell production at its factory east of Reno, Nev.

The new software update also brings a few non-Autopilot related changes, including the ability to adjust the headrests, a new feature that piles your favorite songs from Tesla's Internet radio into one playlist, and the Model X-exclusive abilities to manipulate the opening height of the Falcon doors and deactivate the "easy entry" feature. In addition to a feature that prompted the Model X's headlights to synchronize to music previous year, Tesla introduced Ludicrous Easter-egg modes to improve performance on Tesla P100D vehicles. The delivery count only includes a vehicle if it's transferred to the customer and all paperwork is correct.
