Liverpool super-subs Coutinho and Firmino turn Stoke game on its head

A goal down, Klopp sent on Philippe Coutinho, ill for the last three days, and Roberto Firmino, rested after a punishing schedule, and they turned the game around with a goal apiece.

The home side were on top for much of the opening half but they had to wait until the stroke of half-time to lead.

Klopp summoned his big guns off the bench at the break and Liverpool improved markedly after the interval.

Jurgen Klopp reckons Simon Mignolet "saved" Liverpool's life on Saturday with a brilliant save in the second half to deny Stoke.

Liverpool's Champions League push stuttered in midweek when they conceded a late goal to draw 2-2 with Bournemouth and Coutinho's unavailability would leave resources stretched for a fixture which has proved hard in the past.

"He played in the under-23s then he was injured", Klopp is quoted as saying by the Liverpool Echo as he addressed the media ahead of the trip to Stoke's bet365 Stadium. Jurgen Klopp's side failed to close out the game against Bournemouth on Wednesday night at Anfield as their inability to deal with crosses into the box came back to haunt them yet again.

Premier League Live with Sky Sports airs from 2-6pm on Today FM on Saturday.

Liverpool's poor form against teams outside of the top 7 have made predictions everywhere go awry this season but it is hard to see Jurgen Klopp's men change that trend against Stoke, particularly with the loss of several key players. No team in the world wins only the very, very good games.

Liverpool games have seen a league-high 105 goals scored in them this season in the Premier League.

Stoke are also a resolute side at home and will take a physical approach with Liverpool. We just have to get as many points as we can.
