When the violation occurred, Sharapova said she missed the memo telling her she had to stop using the drug.

French Open tennis organisers will decide on the May 15th whether to give two time champion Maria Sharapova a controversial wild card for the Grand Slam event.

Former world number one tennis player Maria Sharapova.

Whether Sharapova will receive a wildcard at Roland Garros will be known just a week before qualifying begins for the second major of the season, which is slated to be held from May 28 to June 11.

Men's world number one Andy Murray has also voiced his disapproval about the return of Sharapova who was caught out by the sport's anti-doping laws after failing to realise that Meldonium, previously legal, had been added to the banned list.

Stuttgart offered the 30-year-old Russian a wildcard entry because she no longer has a world ranking - a move that angered some players. Sharapova has also been handed a wild card into the Italian Open in Rome next month.

The Russian, who will make her comeback at the Stuttgart Open next week following a 15-month suspension, said that she is confident her opponents still respect her.

However, there are others who have offered their support for Sharapova, including her compatriot, Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, as well as career rivals Serena Williams and Victoria Azarenka.

Tennis player Maria Sharapova addresses the media regarding a failed drug test at the Australian Open at The LA Hotel Downtown on March 7, 2016 in Los Angeles, California.

In December, Serena (35) revealed she was engaged to Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian (33).

However, it's fair to say that her best tennis is well and truly behind her, and not only might she struggle to raise her game back to the level that it was all those years ago, but also catch up to the current pace of the game.

The five-time Grand Slam champion received tons of birthday wishes and gifts from loving admirers, fans and friends alike.
