East St Louis center Jeremiah Tilmon decommits from IL

Jeremiah Tilmon has requested a release from his National Letter of Intent with IL.

The 6-foot-10 Tilmon is a five-star recruit for Rivals, which ranks him as the No. 25 player in the country, and Scout, which pegs him No. 18 overall and as the nation's No. 7 center.

Next came the confirmation that Akron planned on hiring former IL coach John Groce for it's vacant position.

Tilmon - who said he will still consider IL - posted his decision to ask for a release on Instagram. We will wait patiently onthe release from NLI.

Then he kept IL basketball fans on pins and needles, waiting until the last day of the early-signing period to put his commitment to Groce and the Illini in writing.

IL fans everywhere were shattered from hearing news with many fans already assuming that he is not going to be an Illini this fall.

Now, with the firing of John Groce and the hiring of Brad Underwood, Tilmon has chose to ask for a release shortly after he appeared to have re-affirmed his commitment to the Illini. New coach Brad Underwood retained Groce assistant Jamal Walker, who was instrumental in getting Tilmon's commitment. Martin is also from East St. Louis and has strong ties to the area. His crystal ball has Missouri as the front-runner on 247sports.com.

Should Tilmon receive his release, there will be no shortage of suitors.

Illinois' recruiting class of 2017 now shrinks down to three signees consisting only of guards. Tilmon is a good area rebounder and solid shot-blocker. This would be huge for IL.

Another source said Tilmon isn't close to settling on another school. As recently as Monday, Tilmon retweeted his own tweet from last summer when he committed to the Illini. A few days ago, fans were feeling reaffirmed on his commitment. I know if I made a decision and people are constantly calling me, harassing me I wouldn't like that. He's a senior in high school and has one of the most important decisions of his career on the line. Groce has since landed a new head-coaching position at Akron.

I certainly wouldn't count IL out yet.

Jamall Walker was named interim coach after Groce's firing and Underwood retained him on the IL coaching staff.

Tilmon did not rule IL out in the post, stating that his relationship with assistant coach Jamal Walker will always make IL an option.

It was a day of mixed reactions for IL basketball fans on Wednesday. Only time will tell where Tilmon ends up.
