Braves beat Padres 5-2 on opening night at new stadium

It was a night of firsts for the Braves when they opened SunTrust Park to the public for the first time during the regular season. Today the Braves will be playing their second game of a three-game series against the Padres.

Erick Aybar took one for the team when Julio Teheran pegged him with a 91 miles per hour four-seamer.

Quackenbush pitched a scoreless inning against the Braves on Friday in his only appearance after being recalled from El Paso.

Tanaka (1-1) entered with an 11.74 ERA over his first two starts, but he recovered nicely after Matt Carpenter's two-run homer in the first.

Nick Markakis' two-run double in the first inning gave the Braves (3-6) a quick 2-0 lead. "I'm up on him right now". The right-hander was charged with four runs in five-plus innings while giving up eight hits, walking four and striking out three.

Jeremy Hellickson (2-0) allowed two runs and four hits in seven innings.

The first pitch before Friday night's opener against the San Diego Padres at SunTrust Park was delivered from one Hall of Famer, Hank Aaron, to another, Bobby Cox. Inciarte provided some breathing room in the sixth with a two-run shot into the right-field seats after Craig Stammen relieved Chacin.

Over the course of the last 12 IP for courageous relievers, they have allowed 2 hits, 0 earned runs, 1 BB, and have 13 K's. And an Inciarte two-run homer in the sixth - his third in two games - staked Atlanta to a 5-2 lead that made the fans' timeless tomahawk chant last as long and strong as it ever did in either of the previous two home stadiums.

Reliever Jose Ramirez got out of the seventh thanks to a double play niftily turned by Phillips at second base and Jim Johnson pitched a ideal ninth for his third save in as many games.

"Every time I don't go more than six or seven innings, for me, I didn't get the job done", Garcia said.

Padres manager Andy Green said Richard "got a ton of ground balls" before making a mistake with an inside fastball to Phillips, who grounded out to the pitcher in his first two at-bats.

Kennesaw, Ga., resident Josh Johnson brought his 8-year-old daughter Hailey to the game so she could get a glimpse of her favorite player, Freeman, whose No. 5 jersey she wore.

"It looks like they took a lot of parts from a lot of parks and them together", he said.

After hosting an exhibition and a college game, this was the first real test for SunTrust Park. High on his list of newish places: PNC Park, home of the Pirates since their old digs, Three Rivers Stadium, was taken down in the name of progress. For his big league career, Cahill now owns a 4.04 ERA over the course of 263 regular season appearances, 175 starts and 1,155 innings of work in all. In his first start this year, Cahill logged a loss with 5.2 innings, five hits and two earned runs. He was a member of Team USA in the 1996 Summer Olympics at Fulton County Stadium before pitching in the majors at Turner Field.

While Smyrna resident Annette Craddouk, an assistant principal at Ford Elementary School, said she could not get tickets to Friday's game, she said the Battery was better than just a consolation prize.
